Finn Grundmann

I am a trained molecular ecologist, and a legal scholar at the University of Göttingen. I work as a consultant at the intersection between climate policy and natural sciences. I create, navigate, and translate scientific data, to help inform policy, and people. My experience spans local, as well as national governments, international organizations, and private corporations.

I am currently (2024-2026) appointed as an Expert to the UN Supervisory Bodies ‘Roster of Experts’. The Supervisory Body is tasked with further developing and managing the global emissions trading market, focused on aligning standards and projects on emission reductions and removals globally. My focus is on the alignment of the standards with Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement and the EU’s Carbon Removal Certification Framework.

Public (numbers & words)

My background in molecular ecology, and my thesis on global climate models, has allowed me to translate scientific data, informing national policies around Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement and emission trading. I have consulted the Ministry of Environment in Tanzania, in Panama, and in Germany, with the support of the Article 6.4 Readiness Program, the UNEP, the GIZ, and the Regional Collaboration Centre Latin America (RCC LatAm). Most recently my work has involved mediating between public agencies and private enterprises to coordinate and inform the development of carbon reduction and removal projects. In the past three years I have developed international carbon removal projects in the form of nature-based solutions in the US, in the European Union, and in the global south.

Private (communication & strategy)

My foundation, working in the private sector builds deeply on my initial education, pursuing the bilingual International Baccalaureate. I majored in Cultural & Social Anthropology, which informs to this day how I consult and how I managed my own companies in the past.

I founded 44moles GmbH/LLC shortly after finishing my thesis. I built a software tool to scan and quantify CO2 in forests. Before exiting the company, within two years I built a team of 30 people, across three continents, managing the collection, the processing, and the communication of data. Positioning the company in the global network of climate policies and global players, allowed me to quickly contribute to policy, and the private initiatives on the market. Most recently, I hosted a panel at the EU Climate Summit in Florence to discuss the perks of complex markets.
